Authenticator App for Vercel: How to Set Up and Use 2FA

vercel.com ↗

Vercel supports two-factor authentication (2FA) using Time-Based One-Time Passwords, commonly known as TOTP codes.

That means you can connect a compatible authenticator app for Vercel and use a temporary 6-digit code as the second step when signing in.

Vercel introduced TOTP-based two-factor authentication in April 2025. It also supports passkeys as an alternative second factor.

Does Vercel Support Authenticator Apps?

Yes.

Vercel officially supports authenticator apps that generate TOTP verification codes.

Examples can include:

  • Google Authenticator
  • Authy
  • 1Password
  • Other compatible TOTP authenticator apps

The authenticator generates a temporary verification code that Vercel can request after your normal sign-in method.

A typical login works like this:

Email OTP or Git provider → Authenticator code → Vercel account

If you sign in with a passkey, Vercel notes that the passkey already provides multi-factor authentication and you may not receive an additional TOTP prompt.

How to Enable 2FA on Vercel

To connect an authenticator app:

  1. Sign in to your Vercel account.
  2. Open Account Settings.
  3. Go to Authentication.
  4. Find the Two-Factor Authentication section.
  5. Enable 2FA.
  6. Choose the authenticator-app option.
  7. Follow the setup instructions shown by Vercel.

Vercel’s current documentation directs users to the Authentication area in Account Settings to configure two-factor authentication.

During setup, Vercel will provide the information your authenticator needs to create verification codes.

How to Connect an Authenticator App to Vercel

Once Vercel displays the setup information, open your authenticator app.

Usually, the process is:

  1. Open the authenticator.
  2. Tap Add account or +.
  3. Choose Scan QR code.
  4. Scan the QR code displayed by Vercel.
  5. Wait for the Vercel account to appear.
  6. Enter the generated 6-digit code back into Vercel.
  7. Complete the setup.

After Vercel accepts the code, your authenticator is connected.

Do not share your setup QR code or setup key with anyone.

How to Use the Vercel Authenticator Code

After setup, Vercel may ask for a verification code when you sign in.

When that happens:

  1. Complete your normal Vercel sign-in.
  2. Open your authenticator app.
  3. Find the Vercel entry.
  4. Read the current 6-digit code.
  5. Enter the code into Vercel.
  6. Continue to your dashboard.

Vercel’s own 2FA guidance shows a standard prompt asking users to enter the 6-digit code from the authenticator app.

Authenticator codes change regularly.

If the code is about to expire, wait for the next one before entering it.

What If the Vercel Authenticator Code Does Not Work?

If Vercel rejects the code, check the simplest causes first.

Make sure:

  • You selected the correct Vercel account in the authenticator.
  • You are entering the latest code.
  • Your phone’s date and time are correct.
  • You did not accidentally configure Vercel more than once.

Do not immediately delete the Vercel entry from your authenticator.

Try a fresh code first.

If your authenticator works normally for other services but Vercel continues rejecting the code, review Vercel’s current account-authentication settings.

What If You Lose Access to Your Vercel Authenticator?

Recovery is different from normal authenticator setup.

If you still have access through another authentication method, use it before attempting to reset your authenticator.

Vercel may provide recovery options including:

  • Recovery codes
  • A previously configured passkey
  • A linked GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket identity
  • Vercel’s 2FA recovery flow

Recent Vercel support guidance states that eligible accounts may use a linked Git provider to verify identity during self-service recovery. Users can also use an existing passkey or saved recovery codes.

If none of those methods are available, Vercel provides a Start 2FA recovery option during the login process.

Save your recovery codes when you first enable 2FA so you do not have to rely on support later.
