Authenticator App for Opera 2FA: Protect Your Account, Sync Data & Login

auth.opera.com ↗

Your Opera account can hold more than a browser profile.

When Opera Sync is enabled, the account can be used to synchronize information such as bookmarks, open tabs, browsing history, Speed Dials, and passwords across your devices.

That makes account security especially important.

Opera supports two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, allowing you to require a temporary verification code in addition to your account password when signing in.

Why Opera 2FA Matters More If You Use Sync

An Opera account can connect multiple browsers and devices.

With Sync enabled, data you select can automatically become available on your other signed-in devices.

Depending on your Sync settings, that can include:

  • Bookmarks
  • Speed Dials
  • Open tabs
  • Browsing history
  • Passwords
  • Other supported browser data

So protecting your Opera account is not only about preventing someone from changing your profile.

It can also help protect access to the browser data associated with your account.

Does Opera Support an Authenticator App?

Yes.

Opera accounts support a second authentication factor that can be generated using an authenticator app.

The basic sign-in flow becomes:

Opera password → Authenticator code → Account access

The verification code changes regularly and is generated from the secret established when two-factor authentication is configured.

This means you do not need to wait for an SMS every time an authenticator code is requested.

How to Set Up 2FA on an Opera Account

Start from your Opera account rather than from the authenticator app.

Sign in to the Opera account associated with your browser.

Open the account or security settings and find the option for two-factor authentication.

Opera will guide you through enrollment.

When you reach the authenticator setup step:

  1. Open Authenticator ℠ App.
  2. Add a new account.
  3. Scan the QR code provided by Opera, or enter the setup key if Opera provides one.
  4. Wait for the temporary code to appear.
  5. Enter that code back into Opera.
  6. Complete the activation process.

Once enabled, Opera can request an authentication code when you sign in to your account.

Adding Opera to Authenticator ℠ App

The important part of the setup process is the secret provided by Opera.

Do not create a random Opera entry inside an authenticator app first.

Instead:

Opera account → Enable 2FA → Receive QR/setup secret → Add to authenticator app

The authenticator app then uses that secret to generate codes that Opera can validate.

If the Opera account and authenticator app were not paired using the same secret, the generated numbers will not work.

Signing In to Opera With 2FA

After two-factor authentication is enabled, signing in may require two credentials.

First, enter your Opera account email and password.

Opera can then request the current code from your authenticator app.

Open Authenticator ℠ App and select your Opera account.

Enter the current code before it expires.

If the code is close to changing, wait for the next one. This reduces the chance that it expires between copying it and submitting it.

Opera 2FA and Browser Sync

Two-factor authentication protects the Opera account login, while Opera Sync controls which browser information is synchronized.

They are related, but they are not the same feature.

For example:

2FA: Helps prevent unauthorized account sign-in.

Opera Sync: Moves selected browser information between devices using your Opera account.

Opera says users can choose which types of information are synchronized and can stop syncing a device by signing out.

Signing out does not automatically erase browser data already stored locally on that device.

What Happens When You Sign In on a New Device?

When you install Opera on another computer or phone, you can sign in to your existing Opera account and enable synchronization.

If 2FA is active, Opera may require your authenticator code as part of that account login.

Once successfully signed in, you can choose which categories of browser information should sync to the new device.

This is why you should be careful about approving an Opera login you did not initiate.

A successful login could potentially give another device access to data you have chosen to synchronize.

Opera Authenticator Code Says “Incorrect”

A valid-looking six-digit code can still fail.

Before disabling 2FA or resetting anything, check a few common causes.

Wait for a fresh code

If there are only a few seconds left on the current code, let it expire.

Enter the next code as soon as it appears.

Check the correct Opera entry

Users with many accounts in an authenticator app can accidentally copy a code from the wrong service.

Verify that you selected the Opera account connected to the email you are trying to access.

Check device time

Authenticator codes depend on accurate device time.

Set the phone running your authenticator to use automatic date and time.

An incorrect device clock can result in otherwise correctly configured codes being rejected.

Try the Opera account page directly

A documented Opera forum case showed a user having difficulty activating 2FA in Opera Browser while the same activation succeeded when the Opera account page was opened in another browser.

That does not mean everyone needs a second browser, but it can be a useful troubleshooting test if the account-security page itself appears to malfunction.

Keep Your Backup Codes

When a service provides recovery or backup codes during 2FA setup, they are important.

A backup code can provide another way to authenticate if:

  • Your phone is lost
  • The authenticator app is deleted
  • You replace your device
  • Your authenticator data is not restored
  • Your normal codes stop working

Store backup codes somewhere separate from the phone running your authenticator.

Do not keep the only copy in a place that will also become inaccessible if the phone is lost.

What If You Lose Access to Your Opera Authenticator?

First check whether your authenticator data was backed up or transferred to another device.

If you still have an Opera session open on another computer, avoid immediately signing out while investigating the problem.

You may still have access to account or security options from that session.

Then look for any backup or recovery method Opera provided during the original 2FA setup.

Opera forum discussions confirm that account login can prompt users for either an authenticator code or backup code when 2FA is active.

If you no longer have either, use Opera’s official account-recovery or support options rather than repeatedly guessing codes.

Forgot Your Opera Password?

The authenticator code does not replace your account password.

If you forget your password, use Opera’s password-reset process from the Opera account page.

Opera also recommends verifying your email address so that the email associated with the account is correct.

Your email account therefore plays an important role in recovery and should itself be protected with strong authentication.
