Authenticator App for DHL Verification Codes Explained: AdressTAN, SMS & Packstation
dhl.de ↗If DHL asks you for a six-digit code, it does not automatically mean you need an authenticator app.
DHL Germany uses several different verification mechanisms for customer accounts, password recovery, address verification, and Packstation services.
Depending on what you are doing, you may encounter:
- An AdressTAN
- An SMS-TAN
- A Packstation pickup code
- An email confirmation
- A security question
These codes serve different purposes and should not be confused with TOTP codes generated by apps such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authenticator ℠ App.
Does DHL Germany Use an Authenticator App?
For the standard DHL Privatkunden customer account, DHL’s current public help documentation does not describe a normal TOTP authenticator-app enrollment flow.
In other words, DHL does not currently document a process such as:
DHL Security → Authenticator App → Scan QR Code → Enter rotating six-digit code
DHL instead documents account access and verification through its own mechanisms, including email, passwords, security questions, SMS-based checks, address verification, and device-specific Packstation functionality.
So if DHL has not explicitly given you an authenticator QR code or secret key, you should not create a DHL entry manually in an authenticator app.
How Do You Normally Sign In to DHL?
For a standard DHL customer account, DHL says you need:
Email address + password
A CAPTCHA may also be part of the login process.
If your password is entered incorrectly three times in a row, DHL states that access can be blocked for 24 hours. After that, you can use the password-reset process to create a new password.
This is very different from services where every login requires a TOTP code from an authenticator app.
Why Are There So Many Different DHL Codes?
DHL combines account management with physical delivery services.
That means it needs to verify more than just whether you know a password.
DHL may also need to confirm:
- That you control a registered phone number
- That you live at a specific postal address
- That you are authorized to use Packstation
- That a particular parcel belongs to you
- That a device is activated for parcel collection
This is why a single DHL customer may encounter several different kinds of codes.
What Is a DHL AdressTAN?
The AdressTAN is one of DHL’s most distinctive verification methods.
DHL describes it as a six-digit code sent by post to the address registered in your customer account.
Its purpose is to verify your physical address.
This verification is especially relevant when activating services such as Packstation.
The process is roughly:
Create DHL customer account → Verify address → Receive AdressTAN by post → Enter code → Activate eligible services
If you instead verify your identity using an accepted POSTIDENT process, DHL states that the postal AdressTAN may not be required.
Why Is My DHL AdressTAN Not Working?
An AdressTAN can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your password or an authenticator app.
DHL says an AdressTAN may no longer work when:
- It is more than six weeks old
- It has been entered incorrectly three times and becomes blocked
In those cases, DHL advises contacting customer service to request another AdressTAN.
So repeatedly generating numbers in an authenticator app will not fix an expired AdressTAN.
They are completely different security mechanisms.
What Is a DHL SMS-TAN?
DHL also documents the use of SMS-TAN in certain account-recovery situations.
For example, if you forget the answer to the security question used for password reset, DHL may offer an alternative verification method based on information already stored in the account.
One example given by DHL is verification through an SMS-TAN.
That means the code is sent through DHL’s recovery process to the registered phone.
It is not a rotating TOTP generated locally by an authenticator app.
DHL SMS-TAN vs Authenticator Code
They may both look like short numeric codes, but technically they work very differently.
| Code | Where it comes from | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| DHL SMS-TAN | Sent by DHL to your phone | Account verification/recovery |
| AdressTAN | Sent by post | Physical address verification |
| Packstation pickup code | Post & DHL App/email | Parcel collection |
| TOTP authenticator code | Generated locally by an authenticator app | Account 2FA on supported services |
This distinction is especially important when troubleshooting.
A code generated by Authenticator ℠ App cannot substitute for an SMS-TAN or AdressTAN issued by DHL.
